Can Outposts be Upgraded?

Like it says above, I was wondering if outposts can be upgraded to make them bigger, even possibly have modular annexes to increase security to make them harder to take over or something similar along those lines.

At the moment once they are deployed they are set however the weapons can be upgraded on it

Can interior defenses be built on them, then? I'm not sure how easy or difficult it is to capture the three classes of outpost, (or even if interior defenses similar to EA1 are even implemented in such a way that they can be independently constructed) but being able to freely construct some form of defense systems on the interior seems like it would be adequate as a last line of defense, perhaps causing attacking players to decide whether its worth the arduous task of slogging through all those defenses to capture it, or just blowing it up and paying to build your own.
