Hard Points

Hi Rob,
In the most recent blog post, it says that most ships and turrets have light and heavy hard points. My question is: Are these light and hard points for the weapon damage being applied or received? 
To destroy a ship or station, do you need to deplete both the light and hard points?

A hard point is a turret point for the weapon to be placed on, the turret is either a light turret or a heavy turret.
You can destroy a ship/station without taking out the turrets.
